Altimeter Ports

Ports must allow pressure equalization fast enough to avoid altitude measurement errors. The Stroick formula (widely used):

Volume < 100 in³
d=V400d = \frac{V}{400}
Volume ≥ 100 in³
d=2V6397.71d = 2\sqrt{\frac{V}{6397.71}}

Port Placement

Locate on cylindrical section parallel to airflow. Avoid proximity to nose cone shoulder, fins, and rail buttons.
03

Pressure Relief

Without pressure relief, altitude changes create internal over-pressure:

AltitudePressureΔP from Sea Level
0 m101.3 kPa0
1000 m89.9 kPa11.4 kPa
3000 m70.1 kPa31.2 kPa
5000 m54.0 kPa47.3 kPa

Premature Separation

A 4" rocket at 3000m can experience 254 N (57 lbf) force on the nose cone from pressure differential — easily overcoming friction fit!
